Course Objective
Secondary School Literacy Instruction offers secondary teachers an understanding of language and the literacy process as it applies to teaching in secondary schools. The course emphasizes reading and writing in content areas and instructional strategies to support students’ literacy development. It focuses on ways that reading, writing, speaking, and listening are developed and used in learning discipline-specific curriculum, including adaptations for culturally diverse and exceptional learners. The primary focus of this course is to provide middle-level and secondary educators with a plethora of strategies for teaching reading and writing. Educators will learn both reading and writing strategies that will foster and activate the comprehension of print.

- Identify the literacy needs of secondary students in the content areas
- Plan and implement appropriate learning strategies
- Select/adapt suitable instructional and assessment materials for their students
- Reflect on the role of content teachers play in developing adolescent literacy instructional

Course Curriculum
Instructor:
Dr. Sara Hoefler currently engages in private practice for child and adolescent behavior, parent coaching, and life skills coaching. With 25 years of experience in the field, she is an expert in special education.
Her years as a principal of a K-12 school serving exclusively special needs students has given her expertise and insight into how to best work with parents to find the most appropriate options for their children socially, academically, and developmentally.
She holds current certifications in education (K-12) and brings hands-on experience. Dr. Hoefler also co-authored and organized training events in Special Education meditations for teachers, mediators, and lawyers through the Alternative Dispute Resolution Academy.
