This private course is staged for DRC review. It will not be offered or represented as an approved Course A program until written provider approval is received.

Course A Program Overview

A 16-hour live, instructor-led elder-mediation curriculum staged for Florida Supreme Court Dispute Resolution Center training-provider review under AOSC24-14. The program integrates elder-centered process design, ethics, screening and safety, legal and care contexts, family systems, accessibility, technology, agreements, knowledge assessment, and a required continuous multi-party role play.

Format and instructional time

  • Live instructional time: 16 hours / 800 instructional minutes.
  • Schedule: Two live days, 8:00 a.m.–3:50 p.m. Eastern, with breaks and meals excluded from instructional time.
  • Delivery: Live communication technology, in person, or approved hybrid delivery.
  • Maximum class size: 20 participants.
  • Faculty: Guno O. Ritfeld, JD, LL.M., and approved ADR Academy faculty as assigned.

Core curriculum

  1. Eldercaring coordination and elder-mediation context; court referral pathways and confidentiality.
  2. Florida mediator ethics, self-determination, impartiality, competence, information boundaries, and process quality.
  3. Advance directives, powers of attorney, guardianship, surrogacy, capacity, and less-restrictive principles.
  4. Aging, cognition, disability access, communication accommodation, culture, family systems, and mediator bias.
  5. Intake, ongoing appropriateness screening, abuse, neglect, exploitation, intimate-partner violence, mandatory reporting, and safe termination.
  6. Multi-party process design, listening, conflict dynamics, resources, technology safeguards, options, and durable agreements.
  7. Guided demonstration, continuous multi-party role play, skills assessment, knowledge assessment, and remediation.

Completion requirements

  • Full attendance for all 800 instructional minutes.
  • Every required exercise and discussion.
  • Continuous role-play participation from the mediator opening for at least 50 minutes.
  • At least 80 percent on the knowledge assessment.
  • Effective demonstration of basic elder-mediation skills.
  • Completion of assigned remediation and final instructor approval.

Regulatory foundation

  • Florida Supreme Court Administrative Order AOSC24-14 and incorporated Course A learning objectives.
  • Rules for Certified and Court-Appointed Mediators 10.200–10.690.
  • Florida Statutes Chapters 44, 415, 709, 744, and 765, as applicable to the training topics.

Course A must precede Course B, and both courses must be completed within one two-year period. Completion of Course A alone does not qualify or roster a participant as an eldercaring coordinator; judicial circuits determine qualifications and appointments.
