Course Description
This course provides Florida mediators with practical and ethical guidance for conducting insurance claims mediation. Emphasis is placed on the ethical responsibilities of mediators, including neutrality, informed consent, confidentiality, party self‑determination, and professional conduct in insurance‑related disputes. Participants will examine common ethical challenges specific to insurance claims mediation and learn best practices for maintaining compliance with Florida Supreme Court mediator standards while facilitating fair and effective resolution.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify ethical obligations applicable to insurance claims mediation under Florida Supreme Court mediator standards.
- Apply principles of neutrality, impartiality, and self‑determination in insurance‑related disputes.
- Recognize and appropriately address ethical challenges unique to insurance claims mediation.
- Maintain professional boundaries while managing power imbalances and high‑conflict negotiations.
- Ensure ethical decision‑making throughout the mediation process, including intake, session management, and closure.

Guno Ritfeld
Guno Ritfeld is a retired Department of Defense Commissioned Officer. He has earned a B.A. in Psychology/Education, a Juris Doctorate (J.D.), and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree.
He is certified by the Florida Supreme Court as a Circuit Civil, Family, and County mediator and has served as a County mediator at the Orange County courthouse. He served as a member of the City of Orlando Certification Appeals Board and Chapter 57 Discrimination Board, and as a contract Human Rights Mediator and Administrative Investigator for various state and federal agencies. He is an experienced commercial, workplace, and family dispute mediator and arbitrator.



I found the program too long and some of the issues were repetitive. Otherwise it provided a great deal of excellent information and insight into the world of insurance mediation.
